The Pain of Teething

Updated: May 23, 2019

Any mother would know that when your baby is teething everyone feels the pain.

Teething can be a pain for the whole family.

If you live in Adelaide, South Australia, you most likely would have been told to try the Women's and Children's Hospital teething gel, and those that have it love it. But in recent days W&C have discontinued the production and recommendation of teething gels, due to new concerns about its main ingredient lidocaine .

Lidocaine is commonly known for its topical anesthetic properties, but it is also a cardiac depressant used for its antiarrhythmic properties. Now I'm not going to be the one to tell you whether or not you should be using it, but I want everyone to be informed about what they use for their family and what some of the other more natural options are.

As the Women's and Children's Hospital teething rings, cool cloths and other forms of pain relief (again be informed about the pros and cons) are effective options. But, have you ever considered the soothing properties of essential oils?

Used for generations, essential oils can offer a natural solution to soothe the discomfort associated with teething. Many essential oils have analgesic properties, below is a list of the commonly used essential oils for teething.

Recommended essential oil dilution for babies and children.

ESSENTIAL OILS FOR TEETHING:

Clove (Over 2 years of age)

Myrrh

Helichrysum

Melissa

Lavender

HOW TO USE ESSENTIAL OILS SAFELY FOR TEETHING

When using essential oils for teething the best option is to apply it topically along the jawline. Essential oils can be very potent and must always be diluted, see figure above, in a carrier oil such as coconut or almond oil to avoid irritation, especially with delicate skin and babies. Patch testing on a small spot of skin is also always recommended.

Diffusing essential oils in a well ventilated room can also have a soothing effect on the baby.
